OpenAI has launched a new feature called "Projects" for ChatGPT, designed to help users organize their AI interactions. This new tool allows users to group related chats, files, and instructions into themed folders, making it easier to manage different topics. The feature is currently rolling out to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Teams subscribers, with plans to extend access to free users soon and to Enterprise and Edu users early next year.

ChatGPT Projects Interface

With Projects, users can name each folder and assign a color for easy identification. Within these folders, you can upload relevant files, set specific instructions for ChatGPT, and add existing chats. This means that if you're working on a screenplay or coding a website, you won't need to repeat the same details each time you start a new chat. This new feature addresses a common user frustration: a cluttered sidebar with endless scrolling.

The "Projects" feature is similar to what other AI chatbots like Claude already offer. It allows users to maintain context within specific projects, and you can even use other ChatGPT features such as Canvas within the project space. For example, you can upload design files and content ideas and instruct ChatGPT to favor the Canvas for coding. The AI will remember past interactions and details within the same project.

The applications are broad, from planning a Secret Santa gift exchange to managing home maintenance logs. You can set rules, budgets, and upload wish lists. OpenAI demonstrated how Projects can be used to organize a Secret Santa exchange, keeping all related data in one place. This keeps you from shuffling through several spreadsheets and copy-pasting information.

While the feature is a great organizational tool, its effectiveness depends on clear communication with ChatGPT. Vague prompts may lead to unintended results, and it's important to always check for errors. Also, remember that the ability to use ChatGPT for image generation is still separate from this project feature.

Key Takeaways:

  • ChatGPT Projects allows users to create folders to organize chats, files and instructions.
  • Projects are available now for ChatGPT Plus, Pro and Teams users.
  • The feature will be available for free users soon, and for Enterprise and Edu users early next year.
  • Projects enables the AI to remember past instructions and data within the same project.
  • It can be used for a variety of tasks, from managing projects to organizing data.

OpenAI's 12 Days of "Ship-mas" event also included the release of the Sora video generator, and an integration with Apple Intelligence. Projects is another step forward in making AI more practical and user-friendly.
